Many of you may know that our son was the cause for us finally taking the plunge into paleo. We had toyed with the idea for some time, even attempting the change a year earlier, but it wasn’t until we realized our son needed a change in his diet in order to help him control his “sillies” at school that we went all in. Cutting out all grains, refined sugars, dairy, and artificial colors/flavors made a world of difference. He became a different kid, getting praises at school and at home.
Now here we are, over 3 years later. We have slip-ups now and then, and when we let a few things slide, we can see the difference in his personality and actions, so we clean things back up and all is good. Our son is a bit on the thin side, he’s got the metabolism that every adult woman dreams of. That, and he really just never stops moving. As an active kid that would rather run and jump and play instead of sitting at the table and eating a full meal, we tried to figure the best way to get some extra protein and calories in his active and growing body.
While perusing the aisles of Trader Joe’s one day, I came across a chocolate hemp protein powder. There were 3 ingredients: cocoa, hemp, coconut sugar. It seemed like the perfect supplement for our little guy, so we tried it out. He drank it hesitantly, so long as it was mixed with almond milk. When that ran out, I conjured up my own mix with the same 3 ingredients, and he liked it better, but I just couldn’t stomach it. Hemp has a very distinct flavor and texture and it was just too much for me.
Honestly, he really just wanted it because it meant he could chug it down in 30 seconds and be on his way, rather than sitting at the table for 30 minutes while I pestered him to finish his food so we could clear the table. He truly is the world’s slowest eater (unless it’s a burger, then it’s a different story).
Shortly after all this, I received a sample of The Perfect Paleo Powder. A quick review of the ingredients and I was slightly blown away (huge understatement!). Without even opening the canister, I was impressed. Not a single weird ingredient, everything derived from a natural source, and it had 3x the amount of protein per serving (27g to be exact) as the hemp stuff I was making. I think I read the ingredient list about 5 times, probably expecting to find an ingredient that I couldn’t pronounce or that wasn’t considered “whole” or “real” food. I never found it.
You can read all about the amazing ingredients here. The thing that I love is that all the protein comes from real sources. Nothing synthetic, no whey (we have dairy sensitivities), no refined sugars. Just real food. Every time I read through the ingredient list I’m still impressed. There’s just so much good stuff in there, not just protein. I’ve been struggling to get enough B12 lately, and 1 serving of The Perfect Paleo Powder contains 74% of your daily value. Seventy-four percent!
The first test came when I opened it up and smelled it. Smell is important. You can tell almost right away if something will be good or not depending on how it smells. So how does The Perfect Paleo Powder smell? Almost exactly like Ovaltine (from what I can remember, since the last time I had any was about 5 years ago). Very good sign.
Next test: taste (obviously). First we tried it mixed in water (which is the serving suggestion). I have never in my life been able to drink any protein powder mixed with water. I won’t say that this was delicious in water, but I was able to drink it and not gag, which is a huge step. My husband and son, on the other hand, can guzzle it down in water with no problem. After water, I tried it in almond milk. Much better. I really liked it a lot. The 5-year-old requested a taste, so I obliged. Then she refused to give it back and finished the last 3 ounces. I would call that a success. Best part, I didn’t feel bad about it because, again, the clean ingredients. So. Much. Good!
Rob has had his fair share of different protein powders in his life, and I’ve never seen him as impressed by one as he was with this. He kept looking at the ingredients and then drinking some more, almost like he was trying to figure out what was making it taste so good or how something without artificial flavors could taste so chocolatey delicious. It just goes to show that real food and taste really great.
Then we let our son try it. Mind you, he had been drinking hemp protein for about a month at this point and had gotten used to the grit and weird hemp-y flavor, he actually liked it, I think. When we handed him the cup of Perfect Paleo Powder protein, he took a few sips and got all giddy: “Mom, this is way better than your stuff!”. I would have been offended if I didn’t agree with him. I am sold on this protein and am pretty sure I can never drink any other kind ever again. Not that I would because this is only one I’ve seen with such pure ingredients that tastes so good.
Now, while this stuff really is great to drink on it’s own, I do like to mix it in to a few things to sneak in a little extra protein here and there. The obvious thing to do with it is add it to a smoothie. But not just any smoothie. Our favorite is the Elvis Smoothie. Chocolate, almond butter, and bananas, but now with an extra boost of protein. Perfect for after the gym (now that I’ve actually started going again…) or as a quick breakfast (us night owls sometimes wake up with 15 minutes total to get the kids ready and out the door – whoops).
And just recently, I started making some breakfast cookies so the kids could have a little break every now and then from the monotony of eggs (which won’t get any better since we added 9 more chickens to the flock last month). And instead of adding cocoa powder to the cookies, I added The Perfect Paleo Powder and now they have a little bundle of animal protein, fruits, nuts, and seeds to eat as they walk to the bus. And they love them because they’re cookies and everyone loves cookies.
I was never really comfortable with post-WOD protein drinks, even before our paleo days. The list of chemicals just weirded me out. I drank them sparingly, but never felt good about it. I had to be extra vigilant to be sure my kids never snuck sips because I definitely didn’t want them drinking that stuff. Now, I not only feel comfortable and confident with my post-WOD drink, the only reason I have to deter my kids from sneaking sips is because I want to finish it all.
